In fact it is possible to register any sign as a trademark, as long as it is distinctive and not explicitly excluded as being only protectable through patent or design protection. The latter protection systems are limited in time and can not endlessly be renewed, while trademarks can. Examples of signs to be registered as a trademark are word marks, device marks, logo’s, company names, company logo’s, band names, names of sports teams, names of foundations, service marks, etc.
